Bellator Continues to Jump Shark

I get it. Adding Rampage to the roster would lend “credibility” to some low base MMA fans that do not understand the sport but at least know a few marquee names.  Adding Rampage to the TNA roster was awful idea, lowering the sport and the brand equity of Rampage. But again, as a business move for Bellator…I get it.  Take one audience and bring it over to your product.

Now, we go a step further.  Tito Ortiz – love him, or hate him – is a UFC hall of famer.  He is one of the founding fathers of modern day MMA and one of the pioneers of the marketing fight game.  No one could hype a fight and back it up the way Tito could in his prime.  His prime however, has long passed by and his retirement should have remained final.  Shamrock-Ortiz was one of my favorite rivalries.  I admit I was always on the losing side of it as I was often cheering on the World’s Most Dangerous Man.  However, as the years passed by I had hoped that at least one of these fighters would not sink into a sad state of continued fighting.  Shamrock we know will fight until he is Randy the Ram, literally fighting for his life in the ring.  Ortiz, as a business man, I thought would have moved on and away from the cage.

And here we are.  Recently announced is the main event fight of Tito “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.  This is a light heavyweight fan’s dream fight…if it were 2005.

Sadly, it is not 2005.  It is 2013.  Of their combined last 6 fights, there has not been a W among them.

Although Bellator is using two big MMA names to draw in fans for their first PPV event, this could be disastrous for the organization.  You only get one shot at impressing and audience and if this fight falls flat it could be a similar fate as Affliction or the IFL.

Am I being too harsh? Are you interested in this fight?  Tell me why or why not.
