Catching up on the world of MMA

The ol’ 9-5 took me away from blogging for a while.  Two full weeks to be exact.  Let’s look at what happened since I was out.

UFC on-again-off-again ring girl Britteny Palmer joined the UFC Playboy club. I’d write about that, but I feel like we’ve written that one already.  (The Power of Porn)

George Lucas’ daughter won her latest fight in Japan and then celebrated with Darth Vader and some storm troopers. Nope, I won’t be writing about that either…I think I’ve made my stance in this department known before as well.  (MMA is a sport, not a circus right?)

Matt Hamill had a beer created in his honor. No joke here, that’s just cool.

Jake Ellenberger proved the “Nightmare” will continue for Diego “The Dream” Sanchez with a victory over the TUF alumni during the first UFC on Fuel TV offering. I’d provide commentary but as Fuel TV is not offered in my area, I could only watch this:

The Zuffa ban on Nate “The Great” Marquardt has been lifted as was signed by Strikeforce. My head is still wrapping itself around this one, but it can only help Strikeforce to get some quality talent while its remaining staff continue to jump to the UFC.

The UFC offered its first event in Japan in 12 years and certainly delivered on it.  Ben Henderson dethroned Frankie Edgar via Edgar’s usual form of victory – decision. This was another 5 round classic for Edgar and has set the stage for a much anticipated rematch of Henderson and Pettis.  This card showed that only Quentin Jackson remains, the man known as Rampage no longer exists in the ring.  Jake Shields also bounced back from a two fight losing streak over a top international opponent like Yoshihiro Akiyama.

The biggest fight of the Japanese event of course, was welterweight beast Georges St Pierre vs a bunch of school children.

Ronda Rousey backed up her months of smack talk, submitting Miesha Tate to win the Strikeforce bantamweight championship on March 3.  (Perhaps we finally have the next big female MMA Star?) And Martin Kampman continued his streak for ruining evenings by defeating Thiago Alves via submission the night before.

Seems I missed quite a lot over the last few weeks. What will happen next? Let’s find out together shall we.
