NY to Receive “Fight Now!” 24 Hour MMA Network

According to a variety of sources this week, Cablevision is going to launch a 24-hour mixed martial arts television network in the New York area on May 24th.  A 24×7 MMA network is the dream of many fight fans and MMA enthusiasts.  However, the irony of the channel’s availability is, of course, that NY is the biggest hold in terms of legalizing MMA as a sport.

Below is the description of Fight Now! from the National Cable and Telecommunications Association web site:

“Fight Now!, America’s first 24 hour television channel dedicated to giving viewers a front row seat, seven days a week to experience the very best in boxing, wrestling/grappling, mixed martial arts and other combatant styles; along with top notch “fight theme” movies, documentaries and wrap around news coverage makes Fight Now! the untimate TV destination for fight fans”

I enjoy the term “untimate” as it is a perfectly kromulent word that can embiggen even the smallest man…  Anywho, the strength of the network will obvious depend on who backs it from a brand perspective, who backs it from a personality standpoint, and what kind of footage they can offer (because we know the UFC has a stranglehold on the world’s largest MMA database now). You’ll notice I’m not even touching the movies part of the description…no good can come from that.   One interesting footnote I saw came from The Sports Business Journal who stated that “Captain America,” Randy Couture is a minority owner in the channel.

You can follow site activity and updates through its official Twitter handle: @fightnowtv

Whether this channel is the final push to get NY over the hump, or is just a blip on the screen of MMA history is yet to be determined.  If you’re in the NY area, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the channel come May 24th.
