MMA Chokes Out Late Night

If Only...

For the second time in just a few weeks NBC has invited a UFC fighter to its late night programming.  UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones was recently on the very unfunny Tonight Show with Jay Leno and last night former heavyweight champion, and general wild card, Brock Lesnar was on the Late Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Since I’m a member of Team Coco (and someone who actually likes comedy) I can’t watch Mr Leno and I missed out on the interview with Mr. Jones.  From what I’ve heard, it sounds as though the young champion carried himself well.

However, as I don’t have any issues with SNL vet Fallon let’s look at how Brock did last night:

  • Personable. Brock was not reserved or moody as he has been in some prior interviews.   One of the few skills that the WWE granted was the ability to mug to a camera and a crowd.  It was nice to see that side of him again.
  • Solid Plug of Product.  Brock was able to work in both his book “Death Clutch” and his upcoming season of UFC’s “The Ultimate Fighter.”
  • Dressed for Success.  Can’t complain here.  The man pulled a GSP and was in full-suit, not a t-shirt and jeans as some of the MMA world elite tends to do.
  • Only a few Barbarian jokes. Fallon only made a few testosterone jokes and I can’t chalk those up to him characterizing the sport as a bunch of killers, it was mostly based on Brock’s ridiculous training and physique.  I’ll let this one slide.  (If nothing else than for the fake sword tattoo image of Fallon.)
  • Coaching Sneak Peek. Brock didn’t flinch or complain at the request for a quick lesson on stage, nor did he take the bait when Fallon was itching for a “Rear naked” choke-joke.   Given Brock’s arm size he did teach a roman or “Severn” choke.

Overall a good performance by Brock and one that likely made Dana White and the UFC PR team proud.  I hope someone bought that man a Coors Light after the show.

What did you think of Brock?  Do you think his loss to Cain humbled him or are we in line for another melt down?
