The Next Season of TUF Revealed: Brock v JDS

Posted: January 13, 2011 in Marketing, PR, UFC

So as many of you know by now, they have named the next two coaches of The Ultimate Fighter.  The cast will be heavyweights and the coaches will be former champion Brock Lesnar and current #1 contender Junior Dos Santos.  For those wondering if this will be another “blah” season of The Ultimate Fighter, here is why I’m excited:

  • Heavyweights being coached by True heavyweights – Unlike Rashad & Rampage who were LHWs, this season the big boys will have one of their own training them.  Brock and JDS are two of the fastest men in the division and will show new fans that the heavyweights aren’t the slow men of the old UFC days.
  • BlackHouse MMA – JDS will likely be bringing his BlackHouse MMA crew with him.  This includes the Nogueira brothers, Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida.  Yeah, this team may have an advantage in coaching.
  • DeathClutch MMA – Brock’s camp is a who’s who of big men.  This team will look like something out of clash of the Titans.  In addition to sheer size, if you have watched training videos these guys are strength & conditioning pros.  Any young fighter who associates with this group will have a gas tank for days…
  • Brock’s Mouth & Competitive streak – Brock is known for having loose lips. Not in terms of telling secrets, but in terms of sound bites.  You add in the fact that he is one of the most competitive athletes in the world and he will practically be spewing fireworks.  The PR guy in me cringes (Coors Light/Bud Light) but the overall marketer sees the ratings bonanza he’ll bring.
  • Subtitles Galore – Something tells me that the young Brazilian’s team will have a bonanza of subtitles attached to them.  Whether they are warranted or not. (Think back to poor Nog when he coached, I understood him fine – why the subtitles?)
  • The Actual Battle – At the end of the season we’ll see Brock Lesnar vs Junior Dos Santos. This will be a great heavyweight fight.  The last few seasons have had fights where you knew the outcome before they stepped in the Octagon.  One coach would be far outclassed by another.  This one however, really could go either way and I’m excited to see what happens.

This will be an interesting season of TUF.

  1. I can’t imagine what Dana White had to give Brock (besides his weight in gold) to get him to shed his reclusive nature. He can’t hunt deer in Las Vegas like they did in NY in “I am Legend.” However, he does have his book coming out and if he beats JDS the rematch with Cain will bring him an even larger payday after a full season of gearing up fans. Real man of genius? Perhaps. Mister half-assed apology guy.

What do you think the chances are that the paper mâché door of the training facility (we all know the one I’m talking about) lasts through a season with Brock?

    • The door will last all of two seconds. In fact, I think he’ll just walk through the door when they introduce the coaches. Official prediction: Brock will snap through more doors this season than the Macho Man did Slim Jims in the 90s.

  2. […] I wasn’t out raging or anything and still made the show.  As I’ve said here before, I’m particularly interested in this season as I actually like both […]
