UFC 124: GSP vs. KOS Promotional Video

Posted: November 23, 2010 in Marketing, PR, UFC

As soon as UFC123 was in the books, the promos for 124 were barreling out the door.  The above video was a trailer that began to play during the UFC123 broadcast.  As a marketer I do agree that this is a great promo and has a good head-to-head appeal to grab fan attention and showcase the upcoming title fight.

However, as a MMA fan I do see  just one problem…if you watch closely enough you get a definitive question sent directly to your brain. Why on earth is KOS in title contention?  The video highlights the level of competition and it is very, VERY lop-sided.  Let’s take a closer look.  Since they met at UFC 74, here has been the breakdown of their progress:

GSP: 6 straight victories over main even status athletes; 4 title defenses.

  • Win Dan Hardy Decision (Unanimous)
  • Win Thiago Alves Decision (Unanimous)
  • Win B.J. Penn (TKO)
  • Win Jon Fitch Decision (Unanimous)
  • Win Matt Serra (TKO)
  • Win Matt Hughes  (Submission)

: 6 victories over mid-card athletes; 2 losses

  • Win Paul Daley (Unanimous Decision)
  • Win Anthony Johnson (Submission)
  • Win Frank Trigg (TKO)
  • Loss Paulo Thiago TKO (Punches)
  • Win Yoshiyuki Yoshida KO (Punch)
  • Loss Thiago Alves (Unanimous Decision )
  • Win Chris Lytle (Unanimous Decision )
  • Win Dustin Hazelett (TKO)

Does this look like an equal path?  No.  GSP has been on an absolute tear, destroying the elite of the division.  KOS has had more fights, but that opened him to more losses.  He also did not face the same level of competition as “Rush.”  Watching this season of The Ultimate Fighter has also showcased how much further along GSP is as an athlete compared to Koscheck.  Now, don’t get me wrong – I’ve always enjoyed watching Koscheck’s battles.  However, I can’t say I agree with him getting a title shot against St. Pierre.  This should be a one-sided battle and very reminiscent of GSP’s second fight with Matt Serra….
