The Power of Porn

Posted: November 4, 2010 in Marketing, PR, UFC

Yup. Adult content. I’m guessing I’ll get a few more views on this post than I would have with the original title: “MMA in the Media: UFC Playboy Cover.” Sorry to be so misleading.

As many of you may know – and you should because its been touted for over a month by fans, the UFC and well, porn-lovers –  UFC Octagon girl, and host of The Ultimate Insider, Arianny Celeste is the cover model for the November 2010 issue of Playboy.  I don’t have a copy of the magazine since I’m not 15, but I can appreciate the power of what this cover means for MMA.

All joking aside, Playboy is still a top-tier publication and one that many people want to be in.  For the publication to not only gather Celeste for a shoot but to make her the cover means something big.  Let’s break this down.  A UFC cover means:

  • The popularity of MMA is real. The cover spot is “sacred” for this magazine and for them to place Celeste on the cover means that they think fans will come out in droves which means…
  • The Fanbase is a target audience that even established brands want.  The UFC is currently one of the top dogs with men 18-30 and even a brand like Playboy wants to make sure it stays in line with this growing audience.
  • The sport is creating pop culture icons. People remember Marilyn Monroe, Pam Anderson, and Jenny McCarthy – Arianny may be on her way to this level of fanfare.

Oh, and did I mention this isn’t the UFC’s first time taking over the Playboy Mansion? For those that don’t know, it’s actually the second UFC Octagon girl to grace the cover of the magazine.  Rachelle Leah, now host of MMA Athletics, was on the cover in 2008.

What do you think – am I over-thinking the importance of a this iconic magazine or should MMA fans realize this is a big deal beyond seeing some skin?
