WEC 51: Oh, is that today?

Posted: September 30, 2010 in Marketing, PR, UFC

Once again, I completely forget about the WEC.  It’s sad really. The promotion offers some legit talent and –other than Faber/Aldo – the cards are always free.  And yet, I always forget about them.  Today, there is a title fight. Did you remember? I didn’t. Tonight is WEC 51 and featherweight champion Jose Aldo will take on former UFC competitor and TUF season 5 finalist, Manny Gamburyan.  In addition to this, the card will also offer a rematch of Jamie Varner vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, and will feature Leonard Garcia, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung, Miguel Torres and Mike Brown (who –what the what- isn’t even on the main card)!!

Not a bad line up…but did you know about it? I’ve lost track of how many commercials I saw for Mir/Cro Cop and I’m sure will be inundated with commercials for *yawn* Bisbing/Akiyama soon.  But how did I miss this fight? The WEC will never have the marketing engine behind it that the UFC does – despite both being owned by Zuffa.  This is another prime example of why the WEC should just be folded into the UFC and have that promotion gain a few lighter classes added to their mix of talent.

The company has some serious talent…but can’t seem to get the same level of attention from fans as the mothership’s prize pupil, the UFC.  Another problem for the promotion is that to get any attention it needs to march almost all of its stars out each card for viewers.  I think Urijah Faber is the only person with a day off here. (And likely only because he is still in recovery from his battle with Aldo.)

For those that want to tune in, here is the line up for the card:

Main Fight Card
•    Jose Aldo vs. Manny Gamburyan
•    Miguel Torres vs. Charlie Valencia
•    Donald Cerrone vs. Jamie Varner
•    Chan Sung Jung vs. George Roop
•    Leonard Garcia vs. Mark Hominick

Prelim Fight Card
•    Mike Brown vs. Cole Province
•    Chris Horodecki vs. Ed Ratcliff
•    Antonio Banuelos vs. Chad George
•    Demetrious Johnson vs. Nick Pace
•    Diego Nunes vs. Tyler Toner
•    Pablo Garza vs. Tiequan Zhang

*Bolded names are those that I’m comfortable placing my bets on.

I’m not sure if I’ll remember to tune in, but I’m sure I’ll be reading about Aldo’s decimation of Gamburyan tomorrow morning. For those that want to watch, the fights  will be available for free on the VS. Network at 9 p.m. ET.  For more info visit: http://www.wec.tv/
