MMA PR-a-thon: What News Dropped This Weekend

Posted: September 20, 2010 in Marketing, PR, Social Media, UFC

What a whirlwind of activity this weekend. Starting Friday it seemed that there was more MMA news than any one fan could digest.  That – my friends – is a great problem to have.  I’m glad the days of scouring for news is gone and with a few short clicks we can be inundated.  However, it also depends on how good that news is.   Here are three stories that really caught my eye:

The UFC Continues to Dominate Social Media: UFC president Dana White announced that he was part of TwitChange, a Twitter charity program. All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide the means to finish rebuilding the Miriam Center. (The Miriam Center houses, educates and loves on Haitian children with cerebral palsy, severe autism, and other major life challenges and is one of the only facilities of its kind in Haiti. The current facility houses children in the earthquake’s aftermath and is extremely overcrowed.) This is a great cause and I hope that Dana (@danawhite) fans help them raise a good chunk of change.

Kevin James will star in a MMA movie: Sony has announced that King of Queens and

“Grown Ups” star Kevin James has signed for an untitled movie set in the world of mixed martial arts.  James will play a physics teacher (I know, this caught my eye too..) whose school is facing drastic budget cuts. In order to earn money to save his jobs and programs  he moonlights as an MMA fighter, and ultimately winds up fighting in the UFC.  If you read this blog, you know my thoughts on MMA movies – but after some reflection (and cursing) I think there is the chance to have a positive ending for this film.  If we’re lucky this can be MMA’s Talladega Nights and provide some laughs– and not be MMA’s “Semi-Pro” and just bring tears…

Karma is an MMA Fan after all: It was announced this weekend that UFC middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen tested positive for

performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) after his now famous 5 round war with champion Anderson Silva. Sonnen has drawn recent attention by ridiculing the UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, and denying a recording in which he was alleged to have said cyclist Lance Armstrong “gave himself cancer.”  Sonnen’s positive test came from a urine sample he gave before the Silva fight that was then processed through the UCLA Olympic drug-testing lab. This couldn’t happen to a nicer guy and I hope this means they will not move forward with Silva/Sonnen II and perhaps line up Vitor Belfort or Nate Marquardt instead.

What will the rest of this week bring us?
