Tonight we will see the UFC hit Austin, TX for the first time.   Based on the ‘blah’ card it may also be the last time.  I’ll be surprised to see if this event sells out, but as a huge UFC fan I’ll hope for the best.

The only fight on the card that really caught my eye is the main event, Marquardt vs Palhares.  This fight places two great grapplers against each other and I’m excited to see how things fare when they hit the ground.  (Of course both fighters have shown excellent stand up skills in previous matches, however as a clear lover of BJJ I’m hoping this is not a stand up war).

The Breakdown:
Nate “the Great” Marquardt wins:
7 (T)KOs
15 Submissions
7 Decisions

Rousimar Palhares wins:
1 (T)KOs
8 Submissions
2 Decisions

I’ll keep this post short and sweet. I think after an interesting chess match of grappling skills that Marquardt will walk away with a victory via TKO.  (I can’t see Palhares tapping out to anything). This win will place Marquardt back in the championship race and hopefully set him up with a rematch with the winner of Silva/Sonnen II.   As a member of the elite Jackson training camp and having a level of skills that Joe Rogan once deemed “Video-game-level-violence” Marquardt is an easily marketable entity for the UFC.  Similar to many previous champions, he could become a strong PR rep for the promotion.

Should Palhares win, I’m not sure what the UFC will really receive from the victory outside of the already tuned-in viewers.  Palhares will not carry the same market value to sponsoring brands and frankly has still left a sour taste in many fans mouths from his previous match up.

Who do you think will come out on top this week?
