Enough with Kenny Florian already…Boston Coverage Continues

The Greatest Bar in Boston to host "after" party...

Following up on my post from yesterday I wanted to keep the news flowing on the UFC’s first major even here in Boston.  Today’s coverage comes from respectable radio station WEEI and ‘newspaper’ the Boston Herald.  Now there are few papers in this world I hate more than the Herald – I think it’s a rag – but as I am looking at all Boston media here, I had to give it a shot.

Also, I want to call out the obvious. Kenny Florian is getting the biggest PR push out of this entire event.  With many local stars on the card, he seems to be the promotions big focus.  This is a shame.  Not just because I am obviously not a fan, but because there are great fighters like Joe Lauzon and Marcus Davis that I wish would get a bit more love than being thrown the occasional media bone.   Anyway, I digress…

Today’s coverage:

  • Kenny Florian, UFC Fighter”  WEEI Radio
This local radio station speaks with Dover, MA nativie, Kenny Florian.  According to the overview, “Kenny talked about if he ever believed he would be able to fight in Massachusetts, how he was working in financing before getting into MMA, what influenced him to get into the business of MMA, how he has learned so much about himself while training and how he doesn’t consider himself a fighter, some of the injures he has suffered, what exactly is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the importance of his fight against Gray Maynard at UFC 118.”

  • UFC Happy in the Hub,” The Boston Herald
The article focuses on the fight to get MMA into Boston, the local fighters (KenFlo again…) featured at the press conference yesterday in Fanieul Hall, and of course the ongoing war to get MMA into NYC.
  • Fans Guide to the UFC Fan Expo” The Boston Herald
The article is a full break down of all activity at the Expo as well as the schedule so fans will know what is what – and more importantly when.
  • Nothing like home cooking for Florian,” ESPN Boston
Article focusing on – that’s right – Kenny “KenFlo” Florian.  Sigh… This piece also includes a pretty good ESPN interview with UFC President Dana White and Hall of Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture.

In my search for coverage I also started seeing folks post their “after party” locations for the UFC PPV.  Of course, since the event ends at 1 a.m., I’ll be shocked if there is any actual ‘after’ location.  The above ad was from the Greatest Bar.  Although I’ll clearly pass on that particular location, it may be worthwhile for more casual fans who are interested in spectacle (dancing, etc) vs watching the actual sport.

Also, don’t forgot to keep your eyes open to the ever important Twitter stream to win free UFC stuff.  The UFC is continuing their #HUNTUFC promotion and is giving away autographed memorabilia around Boston.  Follow @DanaWhite and @UFC for your chance to win.  If I didn’t have this whole 9-5 thing you better believe I’d be patrolling the city right now for the goods.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on predictions of the main card.  Who do you think will win this weekend – Edgar or Penn? Couture or Toney?
