UFC 118 Countdown: Days Away

Posted: August 25, 2010 in Local MMA, Marketing, PR, UFC

After weeks of waiting, the UFC has descended upon Bean Town. We are days away from UFC 118 and the UFC Fan Expo.  This is going to be an exciting weekend as it does mark the first major MMA event in Boston.

As a marketer, I’ve slowly been waiting for the deluge of ads, articles and broadcast coverage to start streaming in.  Waiting to see if it would be positive, negative, or indifferent. Well, finally the waiting can cease.  Boston.com – the online edition of The Boston Globe – had three separate pieces on UFC 118 drop today.  I would recommend you check each of them out.

  • In UFC, it truly is survival of the fittest,” by Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff
The article is an interesting look at Boston trainer Peter Welch and his work with Dover, MA native and UFC veteran Kenny Florian.

  • Rage in cage a knockout in Mass,” by Bob Holer
This is a mixed article.  Some points fair, but mostly a biased look at the old days of the UFC.  Just look at the opening line “Blood will be spilled and brains rattled. Body parts will be wrenched and battered, some damaged.”  This article once again features Kenny Florian.

I’ll continue to keep my eyes peeled for how the UFC is accepted or rejected here in Boston.  In the mean time, I am very excited to swing by the Fan Expo this weekend before the big PPV.  For those that may not have visited the site recently, here are some newly added grappling matches added to the already stacked weekend:

  • Friday, August 27 at 2 PM Penny Thomas vs. Tracey Goodell; Hermes Franca vs. Ryan Hall
  • Saturday, August 28 at 12:30 PM Rolles Gracie vs. Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu; Renzo Gracie vs. Pablo Papovitch

Will you be attending the grappling competition or walking the expo? Maybe I’ll see you there.
