This weekend marks another great free MMA card from the UFC.  The organization has definitely stepped up with its breadth of talent to put on great cards on free TV – instead of just saving fights worth watching for the high-priced PPV buys.  Although we’ll get to the main event later in this post, let’s look at some of the great fights on this program: Mark Munoz vs Yushin Okami, Tyson Griffin vs Takanori Gomi and John Howard vs Jake Ellenberger.  This is a great line-up for MMA fans.

As you know by now, I have a soft spot for Boston MMA.  As such, for me, this whole event is about John “Doomsday” Howard.  Training out of Brighton’s Wai Kru MMA, Howard has amassed a record of 14 – 4  with 4 straight wins in the UFC including a KO of Dennis “Superman” Hallman.  I’m obviously pulling for Howard to ‘bring the doom’ and bring another win back to Boston.

Now, let’s look at the  Main Event.

The Players:

Jon “Bones” Jones*
Record: 10 – 1 – 0
6 (T)KOs
2 Submissions
2 Decisions

Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko*
Record: 24 – 4 – 0
7 (T)KOs
7 Submissions
10 Decisions

How this one plays out:
I usually try to be fair and unbiased, but let’s be honest – the Janitor will be put out with the trash.  Jon Jones is just too much:  too fast, too strong, and too good. Matyushenko is a great competitor and will certainly provide an excellent test for Jones.  However, not everyone is Randy Couture. My prediction is that this fight ends in the second round by TKO.

I’m also looking forward to this event. I’ll be rooting for Doomsday as well and I think that the main event is going to live up to expectations by being an explosive and dynamic fight. I think it will end in Round One with a Jones KO. However, in the battle of cool names – “Doomsday” beats out “Bones” hands down!
