Enter “The Natural”: A Great PR Move by Lesnar

Posted: June 19, 2010 in PR, UFC

By now, many of you have probably seen the new training video from Brock Lesnar circling the Web.  Coming off a horrible sickness, Lesnar not only looks to be in great shape – he is also looking at a PR goldmine in his new training partner: Randy “the Natural” Couture.    To the shock of many, Lesnar and Couture have stayed friendly since their championship battle at UFC 91.

Although this is another great moment in martial arts, it is also a GREAT PR move my Lesnar.  The purist in me wants to take this as it is: a mentorship forged in the heat of combat.  This is a veteran, with no ego issues, training the man that took his crown.  The PR guy in me sees another side of this story.

Brock Lesnar destroyed the idea that he was just a WWE star when he man-handled Heath “The Texas Crazy Horse,” Herring at UFC 87.  Unfortunately, his win over Frank Mir in their rematch at UFC 100 left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans.  After getting his previous loss to Mir avenged he insulted Mir, the fans and sponsors in his post fight interview with Joe Rogan.   For those that wanted to label him a pro-wrestler it was their early birthday present.

Now, months after the fight and months after his battle with an almost fatal illness, Lesnar is ready to get back in the Octagon against interim champion Shane Carwin.  However, Lesnar is not just preparing for any fight.  He is preparing to make a statement about his return.  This jump to a new training partner is up there with Anderson Silva training Rich Franklin for his fight with Wanderlei Silva or Apolla Creed training Rocky Balboa for his battle with Clubber Lang.

Randy Couture is a 2X light heavyweight champion and a 2X heavyweight champion.  The man known to many as “Captain America,” and to others as “Joe Rogan’s hero,” is the epitome of a MMA hero, role model, and overall sports ambassador.  There are few, if any, people that DON’T love Randy.  To associate with Couture, although a great training partner, is a GREAT PR move by Lesnar’s camp.  By working with Randy, and showing the “Godfather of MMA” the proper respect, Lesnar is primed to get back in the good graces of any fans lost during his disrespectful rant at UFC 100.

What do you think?  Is this a true friendship forged by two men that went toe-to-toe or is this a PR stunt to gain more fans?
